How this calculator works
Projects total nest egg needed for retirement based on current age, target retirement age, inflation rate, and expected investment growth.
Formula
Required Nest Egg = (Annual Target Spending × (1 + Inflation Rate)^Years) / Safe Withdrawal Rate
Worked Example
Age 30 aiming for retirement at 65 (35-year horizon). Desiring $60,000 annual spending today. At 3% inflation, future annual requirement = $168,831. At 4% safe withdrawal rate, target nest egg = $4,220,775.
Assumptions
- Standard 4% safe withdrawal rule applies in retirement.
- Investment growth rates remain stable across accumulation phase.
Limitations
- Excludes Social Security benefits, pension payouts, unexpected medical costs, and sequence-of-returns market risk.
